Norwalk Stars Celebrate With Pizza

The thank-yous keep rolling in for Tracy Raab and her co-workers. Last week, a resident of Haviland Street in South Norwalk expressed her gratitude to Raab, John Darden and Glenn Abruzzi – all clients of STAR, Inc., Lighting the Way – as they cleaned the area near her home. Wednesday, the three were among a group honored with lunch at Famous Pizza.

Raab, Darden and Abruzzi are members of the Sono STARS, a group that cleans South Norwalk's streets, accompanied by STAR staff. The Sono STARS work three to four hours, five days a week contributing to society and earning minimum wage in return. Every three months they are given a pizza party, usually attended by Mayor Richard Moccia and Norwalk Police Sgt. Lisa Cotto.

Also enjoying pizza were Sono STARS Mark Lane, Lisa Taccone and Dean Tomasi and several STAR Inc. staff members. Program coordinator Tammy DiIorio said she had accompanied the three STARS on their trip to Haviland Street Friday. Four residents came over to meet the crew.

"One of the residents owns a house over on Havilland Street," she said. "She was saying that it really does make a difference and she thanked Glen and Tracy and John on Friday and she shook their hands. So it's a great opportunity, not only for the participants who get out and feel like they're making a difference in the community, but they actually get the recognition from the business owners and the residents who live in the area."
