NORWALK, Conn. Three children who study at a Norwalk chess club posted perfect scores in a Stamford tournament, helping the club to dominate the winner's circle in those categories, according to the club.
Seven of the Chess Club of Fairfield County's students took first or second place in their sections of Sunday's National Educational Chess Association tournament at the Italian Club of Stamford, Jeff Peterson said. Zachary Filler, 12, captured sole first place in the middle school section, posting a perfect score of four wins and zero losses. Vishnu Duriseti and Bryan Weisz, both 8, also went four-for-four. Vishnu got a share of first place in the Primary Novice section, and Bryan in the Primary Open section.
The club played in a field of 177 students drawn from across the tri-state area, kindergartners to eighth-graders. The kids are members of the chess master Daniel Lowinger's Dream Team program, meeting weekly for training sessions at the club at 710 West Ave. and spending many weekends on the road, challenging teams from other area programs.
"My goal has always been to assemble the best scholastic chess team in the country," Lowinger said in a statement. "I think our Dream Teamers' success at NECA demonstrates that we're well on our way."
Many of the Dream Teamers are scheduled to compete in the club's Presidents Day Scholastic Chess Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 20.
