Norwalk Catholics Pack Churches on Ash Wednesday

The parking lot at St. Matthew's church in West Norwalk was packed at midday as local Catholics began the 40 days of Lent by receiving ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Lent is the season of penance, reflection and fasting for Catholics as they prepare for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter, Catholic.org says. On Ash Wednesday ashes are placed on their foreheads in the sign of the cross to remind people that their life will pass away on earth, the website says. Ashes are used as a symbol of penance and help Catholics develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice, the website states.

Are you giving up anything for Lent this year?
