Norwalk Aquarium Needs You

NORWALK, Conn. – Pursue your interest in marine animals – and share your knowledge and enthusiasm with others – by becoming a member of the volunteer staff at the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

Interviews for potential volunteers will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, and Thursday, Sept. 22. (You need to attend only one.)

"Helping visitors, especially children, learn about Long Island Sound is personally rewarding and crucial in building public awareness about issues affecting our local environment," Lisa Slinsky, the aquarium's manager of volunteers, said in a statement. "The volunteer program is vital to the mission of the Maritime Aquarium and its educational goals. Plus, it's a fun way to join up with a group of people who have similar interests."

Knowledge of marine animals isn't necessary to be an aquarium volunteer. That is what will be taught in a six-week training course, which will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 6 through Nov. 3.

You must be at least 15 to sign up. Volunteer shifts are four hours long. Volunteers work a minimum of four shifts per month for weekday staff, and two or three shifts per month for those with weekend availability.

Most volunteers work as gallery guides, helping visitors learn more about the exhibited animals of the Sound, from crabs and sea stars to seals and sharks. There is also some need for behind-the-scenes office and special-event assistance.
