'Night School' a Break From a Day Job

Cover bands are as American as pick up trucks and Father’s Day. Fairfield County’s “Night School” may be the quintessential cover band—five guys playing their favorite rock music with all their heart. They’ve been at it for, well, decades. Long before they thought of mortgages or settled into day jobs as ad salesmen and postal workers.

“I know we’re not going to be playing the Garden anytime soon but we are having fun,” said bassist Mike Kovitz, during a break between sets at Rowley’s Tavern in Norwalk. Kovitz is joined by Bruce Anderson on guitar, Chris Carriera on drums, Marc Fleisher on guitar and Andy Bucci doing vocals.

Most every weekend the band members pack up their gear and play a gig somewhere in southern Connecticut. They cover the Stones, John Mellencamp and the Animals. They also play some more recent music such as songs by the Black Crowes—whatever they like or they think the audience will like. Between songs, Bucci gives a shout-out to friends in the audience or fans they recognize from previous performances.

On Saturday night, their best song may have been “L.A.Woman.” As they performed the Doors’ classic, their playing gathered an intensity that took the music to higher level. Anderson’s fingers expertly danced across the frets on his guitar as he and Kovitz stepped into a musician’s duel--- challenging one another to up the ante. Before a winner could be declared, Bucci picked up the vocals again and wrapped up the song. Definitely an occasion when the music was infused with musicians’ sheer delight in doing something they love.

Night School has posted mp3’s on their myspace page along with the band’s schedule. They are booked most weekends through Thanksgiving.
