NEW CANAAN, Conn. The events of Sept. 11, 2001, touched many people in Fairfield County. Maddy Prior and Kelly Saiz are helping to share some of those stories.
The teens, both seniors at New Canaan High School, were among a group of student interns with Voices of September 11th who interviewed New Canaan and Fairfield County emergency responders as well as educational and religious leaders as part of the 9/11 Community Response Project.
A presentation Monday at the New Canaan Library included a slideshow of recollections, artwork and images of a memorial quilt as well as video interviews with local principals and Richard Webb, history department chairman at New Canaan High. Voices of September 11th interns have been working on the project for three years. Fellow New Canaan High rising senior Katherine Moncure was also part of the intern research team.
Prior, 17, said it was touching to hear how people in Fairfield County recount the events of Sept. 11, 2001. It was also uplifting, she said, to see how neighbors united in the aftermath to help each other. Everyone has clear memories of that day and how the community came together, she said.
Prior said she wanted to contribute to the living memorial created by Voices of September 11. I loved every minute of it, she said. It was a lot of work, but we had a lot of help.
Saiz, 17, who was a second-grader in New Canaan on the day of the attacks, said she was proud to help collect the stories, giving her new perspectives and showing how much of an impact the day still has on Fairfield County and the nation. It brought people together in the days, weeks and months afterward, Saiz said, hoping that people remember those feelings as the 10th anniversary approaches.
