Jennifer Falvey's mantra might be "the more snow, the better." It may serve her family as well. With the possibility of yet another significant snowfall in the forecast, Falvey and sons Griffin, 15, and Wynn, 14, are preparing to build a skating rink behind their New Canaan home. The key will be the tarp they purchased at Weed and Duryea, a hardware and home improvement store in town.
"We love the snow," Falvey said. "We're winter people except when it's summer."
Odds are good that Falvey's sons will have plenty of time to use the home rink. The National Weather Service is forecasting snow for lower Fairfield County beginning as early as Thursday evening and lasting all day Friday.
Meteorologist John Murray said the area is facing an 80 percent chance of snow. With the system on an "advisory track," it's safe to expect 2 to 4 inches of snowfall Friday, he said.
"It's hard to tell where the higher amounts might be," Murray said. "Right now, it's just about an 80 percent chance of snow on Friday, and that's uniform throughout the area." Temperatures will remain in the mid 30s on Friday and Saturday, Murray said. The chance for snowfall falls to about 40 percent as the weekend arrives.
Although the upcoming storm will not measure up to what fell two weeks ago, it will be enough to bring more customers to Weed and Duryea, said Eric Snyder, a sales associate. One customer purchased eight bags of deicing salt Wednesday.
"People will come in when they see the weather" forecast, he said. Although he travels from his home in Trumbull, a little snow does not frighten him. "How long have people been living in New England? You should expect it."
But more snow in the forecast makes John Antush, 78, long for warmer weather and baseball at Mead Park instead of ice skating. "I'm looking forward to spring," he said.
