Levinson Details School and the Economy

Dr. David Levinson, President of Norwalk Community College, might be worried his school has become just a little too popular.  Its enrollment has increased by ten percent over last year, as has enrollment at the state's 11 other community colleges.  In Greenwich, for instance, 57 high school class of 2010 seniors made Norwalk Community College their first choice and are freshmen this fall, according to published sources.

Dr. Levinson, however, is a man with a plan, not only on how to absorb greater numbers of students, but also on how to expand the college's resources and offerings in spite of a tough economy. Since his tenure began in 2004, he helped engineer a successful capital campaign that resulted in a new Science, Health and Wellness Center. NCC also became an Achieving the Dream College, which means it now participates in a national initiative intended to help minority and low-income students overcome barriers to higher education. And NCC has been selected as one of 15 community colleges nationwide to receive funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a developmental education project.

Formerly academic vice-president at New Jersey's Bergen Community College, Dr. Levinson is also an editor and author and serves on many national, state and community level committees and boards. On September 17, Dr. Levinson is the featured speaker at Westport Sunrise Rotary's breakfast meeting at Bobby Q's Restaurant, starting at 7:30 a.m. and open to the public. The cost is $12 and includes a breakfast buffet. For more information about Westport Sunrise Rotary, visit the club's website or call its “hotline” at (203) 454-6446. Bobby Q’s Restaurant is located at 42 Main Street, Westport.
