Earlier this month Mr. Joseph Santo was re-appointed to Norwalk's Zoning Commission (which I also serve on) by the Common Council with a 9-6 vote, after having served a commendable 18 non-sequential years since 1988. A member of the public who spoke in opposition to the re-appointment cited his increasing arrogance towards the public in meetings as one of her reasons.
It did not take Mr. Santo long to reinforce that speaker's claim. At the very first meeting of his new 3-year term, Mr. Santo exhibited unprofessional, irrational, and inexcusable hostility towards a member of the public who approached our meeting table to get a better view of the plans in front of us, a common practice in the past.
This Norwalk resident and taxpayer was yelled at by Mr. Santo to get away from the table and sit down for no reason, shocking everyone in the room as she had exhibited no disruption or interference at this important public meeting. The only disruption that occurred at that moment was Mr. Santo's rude behavior, witnessed by everyone in the room including the Zoning Commission, city staff members including the director of planning and zoning, and various lawyers, applicants, property owners, and other members of the public.
At a minimum, Mr. Santo owes an apology to the member of the public who he yelled at for no reason, and to all of those present.
