Kids Step Up in Dance Contest

Children exuberantly pounded the Norwalk Concert Hall stage Saturday in the third annual Step Show Competition, a fundraiser for Fairfield County scholarships. Teams from New Haven, Bridgeport, Stratford, Stamford and Newark, N.J., danced in the event, organized by the Butterfly Project Fund Inc. and The Divine Nine, nine historically Black Greek Letter Organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Jean Napol of Phi Beta Sigma said it is part of an anti-gang outreach. "We're trying to reach each town in each and every way we can," the Fairfield resident said. "We're just trying to reach the youth, show them what other things they can do."

He said Norwalk residents "will be" involved. "We've tentatively scheduled an event to be held here," he said.

Phi Beta Sigma is presenting "One Hour to Live," a play about a gang member on death row, in New Haven on June 4. "Two of the people that he killed basically appear to him in his cell," Napol said to illustrate the effects of gang violence. He said the play might come to Norwalk.
