Norwalk Kids Chef Turns Up the Heat

STAMFORD, Conn. — In the second half of the summer, chef Neena Perez will host cooking camps for kids in Stamford. At the end of the four-day sessions, the children will know how to make a variety of meals.

“It is like a whole menu,” Perez said. Although this is the first camp Perez has held in Stamford, it is not her first time out. She has held camps previously at Norwalk Community College. She started teaching children how to cook about four years ago and did birthday parties for her friends’ kids, and Kiddie Kitchen was started.

“It just turned into a business,” Perez said of her accidental start. She teaches kids in third to 10th grade how to cook breakfast items, international cuisines and grilling specialties. For the younger students, she teaches more about kitchen safety and how to use the equipment. Older kids get to learn more about the quality of ingredients and flavors. “I run it like any other culinary class,” she said of classes for older children.

The kids who learn how to cook from Perez often enjoy the different dishes they make — and Italian is usually the favorite. She rolls out pasta, and the kids form it into linguini, ravioli and other Italian dishes.

“All kids love pizza,” Perez said.

The first week of camp begins July 18, with each session lasting four days. Each day is four hours long, and they are separated by type of cuisine and age of the students. For more information, visit the Kiddie Kitchen website.
