Camp Candlewood offers weeklong sleepover camps as well as day camps with bus pickups in Danbury, Wilton and Ridgefield.
The camp is on 87 acres along the shores of Lake Candlewood. Its programs emphasize water — with all levels of sailing, canoeing, sail-boarding, kayaking and swim lessons available. It also offers a progressive campcraft program for all girls and extended backpacking and canoe trips for older girls.
Camp Candlewood has two swimming beaches, a canoe area, a boathouse and sailing docks. Topside there are nature trails, a year-round dining hall, playing fields, an archery range and a low-ropes challenge course.
Girls stay in small A-frame cabins with counselors in their own A-frame within the cluster. Healthy meals are served to both day and resident campers in a modern dining hall overlooking the lake and valley. Hot water is available for the outdoor showers. The remainder of camp is semi-primitive. Candlewood's property includes a mix of latrines and a few flush toilets.
The day camp, open to all school-age girls, offers one- and two-week day camp sessions. Leadership opportunities and special programs are available for older girls. All girls are welcome -- Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts alike.
If you register now and pay in full before April 1, you will save on the camp fee. Or you can register now, with a small deposit, and have until June 1 to pay the balance.
Girl Scouts of Connecticut has nine day camps and three resident camps across the state. For more information, call 800-922-2770, Ext. 3313, or email camp@gsofct.org. Financial aid is also available. A list of all the camps and their individual programs can be found online.
