Girl Scout Cookies Arrive in Fairfield County

NORWALK, Conn. – Even the most ardent lover of Girl Scouts cookies – and who isn’t one — would have been overwhelmed Saturday at Norden Industries in Norwalk. A total of 19,000 cases of cookies — that means 228,000 boxes — were distributed to troop leaders from eight Fairfield County towns.

That was only part of the 2.5 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies that arrived in Connecticut on Saturday for distribution at 23 pickup locations throughout the weekend, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Girls Scouts of America on March 12.

“I never knew they made this many boxes. It just doesn’t end,” said 15-year-old Owen Vandergraaf, a sophomore at New Canaan High School. He was among about 30 members of the Service League of Boys (SLOBs), a student-parent organization that fosters the parent-son relationship in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and education.

“It feels like we’re taking part is some kind of high-adrenalin sport,” Owen said. “But it’s for a great cause.”

Sophomore Michael Hartnett, also a member of the group, said, “it’s a lot of fun … but very tiring.”

Troop leaders who were picking up their orders said they appreciated all the help loading their cars.

“We have a line of cars picking up 139 cases – that’s more than 1,000 boxes,” said Karen Scherr, a parent leader for a Daisy Girl Scout Troop for first-graders at North Mianus Elementary School in Greenwich.

“This is the first year for our girls, and they’re really excited to be getting the cookies,” said Scherr. “We’re grateful for all the help.”

Kari Kaplan, director of member services for the Girl Scouts of Connecticut, said although the morning was “pretty rough because of the heavy rain, we’re rolling this afternoon."

“The cars just keep pulling in, and we’re distributing the cookies as fast as we can,” said Kaplan. “It’s a great sight to see all the cookies being distributed. After all, what would the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts be like without the cookies?”

Kaplan said Girl Scout troops from Darien, Stamford, Weston, Norwalk, Westport, New Canaan, Greenwich and Wilton picked up their cookies from at the Norden site, Norden Place. Troops from Fairfield and Easton picked up their cookies in Fairfield.
