A box of trinkets wedged under a tree may be the prize, but the hunt may be the real reward in geocaching in Fairfield County.
There are 1,441,880 hidden treasures and over 5 million poeple searching for them worldwide, according to the website Geocaching.com. The way it works it this: someone hides a box of trinkets, records the GPS coordinates and uploads them to a website like Geocaching.com. Players pick the treasure they want to find, plug the coordinates into a handheld GPS device or an iPhone and start searching.
When they find the treasure -- usually a box of items like toy cars, bracelets and other souvenirs -- they pick a few treasures to take home and leave behind some of their own for the next geocacher to find.
A search for geocaches in Fairfield County includes treasures with the following names:
- Schnuffles' Saugatuck Valley Stomp
- Seven Nasty Smells : Grinchmas 2010
