Families Play Before Blizzard Intensifies

UPDATED 6:40 p.m.: Skaters and barbecuers reveled in heavy snow as a blizzard barreled into Fairfield County on the day after Christmas. Keeping the holiday spirit alive, families gathered to play in the white stuff early Sunday afternoon at Woods Pond in Norwalk and elswhere in the region.

Residents also spent the morning laying in supplies for the storm at stores such as The Home Depot in Norwalk and the Stop & Shop in Westport. Residents in New Canaan said the storm brought a welcome halt to the hustle and bustle of the weeks leading up to Christmas.

But few could be found outdoors later in the day Sunday, as the storm intensified and many area roads were left icy and snow-packed.

The heaviest snow is forecast for Sunday night and Monday morning. Another foot of snow could be on the ground by Monday morning before the storm moves out of the area in the afternoon, the National Weather Service says.
