Don't Forget To Dig Out Your Mailbox

Neither snow nor rain may stay U.S. Postal Service mail carriers from completing their appointed rounds. But if your roadside mailbox is buried behind or under several feet of plowed snow, you might not get your daily delivery.

"The Postal Service treats safety and service with equal priority," said U.S. Postmaster Christine George. She asked residents who receive mail delivery at curbside boxes to keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox clear of snow, ice, vehicles, trash cans and other objects.

Residents who have shoveled three storms' worth of snow from their driveways and sidewalks might grab their aching backs and shoulders at the prospect of additional snow removal. But they risk having their mail held until easier access is provided.

"This will permit the carrier to drive up to your mailbox and deposit or collect mail without leaving the vehicle. The approach to and exit from the mailbox should be cleared sufficiently on both sides to allow the carrier to drive ahead and not be required to back up after delivery," George said.
