“Faith and good works come together each year in the Annual Appeal,” Monsignor Jerald A. Doyle, diocesan administrator, said in a statement. “They are at the core of our work as a diocese and our commitment to each other.”
With the theme of “Beacon of Hope,” the appeal has a goal of raising $12 million. The diocese has 82 parishes across Fairfield County with an estimated 400,000 Roman Catholics.
Last year more than 1.3 million meals were served through Catholic Charities and food pantries throughout Fairfield County, including the New Covenant program in Stamford and Morning Glory program based at Dorothy Day House in Danbury.
It also provided for 15,000 counseling sessions and 22,000 visits to nursing homes residents and hospital patients, including at Danbury Hospital, Norwalk Hospital, Stamford Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, St. Camillus Health Center in Stamford and Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care in Danbury.
A total of 1,323 financial scholarships were awarded to inner-city and low-income families to send their children to some of the 38 Catholic schools in the county.
The appeal also helped to support 48 retired priests, including 17 in residence at the Catherine Dennis Keefe Queen of Clergy Residence in Stamford.
It also made it possible for 36 men who are discerning the priesthood to continue their studies at St. John Fisher Seminary in Stamford as well as at other major seminaries.
