Darien YWCA To Honor Women of Distinction

The YWCA Darien/Norwalk will honor six local women at the Women of Distinction Awards and Luncheon on June 9 at the Woodway Country Club. They will also present longtime Darien resident and former employee Anne Flanagan with a Distinguished Service Award.

Flanagan joined the YWCA Darien/Norwalk when she moved to Darien from New York City in 1990 with her four children, and she remains a dedicated member. She served on the capital campaign and was instrumental in expanding the facility to guarantee all programs would have a home. Flanagan joined the YWCA staff as the development director, a position she held until she retired in 2008.

Her dedication to community service spans five decades. She was a Junior League member in Detroit, Boston and New York; and volunteered for the Red Cross, Holy Ghost Hospital for the terminally ill and Pediatric Unit of Mount Auburn Hospital, as well as in New York City and Boston schools. She became involved with Darien EMS-Post 53 and helped raise funds for the new building on Ledge Road. She took the course to become EMT certified and served as one of the first "Daytime Ladies" who partnered with the young adult members in responding to emergency calls.

The guest speaker at the luncheon will be NPR News correspondent Dina Temple-Raston, who specializes in national security and counterterrorism for reports on National Public Radio's newsmagazines.

Tickets and table reservations for the luncheon are on sale at the YWCA website at www.ywcadariennorwalk.org and can also be purchased at the YWCA Darien/Norwalk office at 49 Old Kings Highway N., Darien, or by calling 203-655-2535. Sponsors include Darien/Rowayton Bank; Deloitte; Kelly Associates Real Estate; Grove Street Plaza: Espresso Neat, Go Figure, Melting Pot; Darien Times; and Serendipity magazine.
