Colodny Willingly Walks for Whittingham

Sara Colodny wishes the community didn't need the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital. She is grateful, however, for the facility that helped her wage a battle against breast cancer.

Colodny was one of the participants in Saturday's annual benefit walk/run for the Whittingham Cancer Center. The Westport woman, who rows at Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, raised $26,000 for this year's event.

"We're fortunate, there are a lot of generous people around,'' Colodny says. "The only thing I did was have cancer." Colodny was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2008, and finished up treatment last year. She participated in the walk last year while finishing up treatment. She walked yesterday with Fenella Pearson and Linda Gould, other Maritime members who have been or are patients at Whittingham.

"If this didn't exist, we would have to go New York City or New Haven for treatment,'' says Colodny's husband, Jeff. "You're under enough stress dealing with the cancer. Having the facility here really helps the patient."

Prior to Sara's diagnosis, the Colodnys did not participate in the Whittingham walk, now in its seventh year. After receiving the fine care at the facility and going through the entire process, they don't think of missing it.
