Heroism and loyalty are the emotional touchpoints of "City Sounds," a June 24 concert at The Klein Auditorium, bringing together an eclectic group of musicians in a performance to raise money for the Bridgeport Police Memorial Fund and Bridgeport's no kill Animal Shelter.
Hosted by The City of Bridgeport and Band Together CT, the talent lineup behind the evening's musical melting pot of rock, soul, funk, Latin and more, includes recording artist and songwriter, Audrey Martell, Broadway performer Keith Fluitt, Joyce Candido, Brazilian Press Association Best Female Artist 2011, local rocker Ronnie Ciccia and an all star band. And a surprise or two!
The effort to build a Police Memorial, the concert's beneficiary, is spearheaded by Local 1159 of the Police Union, as a way to remember Bridgeport Police officers who have died in the line of duty. It will be built across from Bridgeport Police Headquarters at 300 Congress St.
Bridgeport's Animal Shelter, also a "City Sounds" beneficiary, is Connecticut's largest no kill animal shelter. To fulfill its mandate, humanely housing and caring for homeless pets, means keeping up with a stream of associated costs for pet food, medical services and facilities upkeep.
And the Shelter's reach and mission extend beyond its walls. Chief Animal Control Officer Jimmy Gonzalez frequently talks to school children about the importance of animals in our lives and how to care for them. His efforts persuaded State Representative Brenda Kupchick (R-132) to introduce legislation at the Connecticut General Assembly that would result in a humane education curriculum for the state's schools, through a collaboration between the State Board of Education and animal welfare groups.
Band Together CT, the City of Bridgeport's partner in bringing "City Sounds" to life, has raised more than $750,000 for worthy causes since Fairfield resident Jerry Vigorito and Rob Fried, of Redding, founded it in 2005. For their efforts, they have received The American Red Cross "Heroes Award" for Public Impact and official recognition from the Connecticut State Assembly, Governor Rell, and the U.S. Congress. For "City Sounds," they have enlisted a roster of musicians who''ll rock the rafters and nail one of Band Together CT's goals: to bring everyone involved "one step closer to Heaven." Tickets are $25 and $28 and are available at FTC's website or by calling (203) 259-1036. Doors open at 7 p.m.
