Carver students prepare for college tour

First stop— Tuskegee University. Fitting for the 25 students from the Carver Center’s Youth Development Program who leave Saturday morning for the Ten Colleges in Ten Days tour. George Washington Carver conducted his most important research at Tuskegee.

The students and their families crowded into a meeting room at the Carver Center yesterday evening for their final planning meeting. They reviewed the itinerary that will take them to schools in Alabama and Tennessee including historically significant Fisk University. The kids turned in paperwork and final payments. They learned the rules and the expectations for their behavior including the appropriate way to dress when meeting with college officials.

“Monday through Friday this is a business trip,” said Novelette Peterkin, Carver’s executive director, who will accompany the students.

The Center sponsors the annual tour as an opportunity for Norwalk students to visit colleges and learn what schools expect from applicants. Peterkin reminded the kids that most of the students who participate in the annual tour get accepted into college and the majority of them earn their degree. For the first time this year, she noted, the majority of this participants are young men rather than young women— a comment that sparked applause.

The kids will be keeping us posted from the road. Student journalists have agreed to serve as correspondents to The Daily Norwalk and file reports detailing their experiences. Be sure to check back as we will be posting their stories and photographs each day.
