Carver Kids Report Back

Student journalist Christopher Hayes files the first article from the road as he participates in the Carver Center’s annual college tour. Hayes is traveling with students from Norwalk, Brien McMahon, Westhill and Stamford High Schools as well as some eighth-grade honor students from Side by Side and West Rocks Middle Schools. The students will visit 10 colleges in 10 days and report back daily about their experiences.

Hayes shares his impressions:

As I entered the Carver Center on Saturday morning, I saw some tired faces but mostly excitement in people’s eyes as we were about to head out to Christiansburg, Va.. During the long bus ride, I saw beautiful scenery such as mountains and rivers. After a few hours, we made it to the hotel but, unfortunately, it was 10:00 p.m.  We only had time to unload the bus and go to our rooms after our daily meeting.

The next morning we all got up early. The boys loaded the bus and we refilled the cooler with lots of snacks and drinks. After everything was finished, we all headed for Montgomery, Ala.. We thought that it was going to be a long ride but it really wasn’t.

Upon arrival, we unloaded the bus and got settled into the hotel. At our daily meeting, we were given directions and allowed three hours of free time. Andre, Marcus, Mr. Benson and I went to the mall for dinner. As we were heading back to the hotel, I could see many lights because it was really dark. At the hotel, we had a meeting that started a little late but it went well. Then everyone headed to their room for the night.
