This is Poppy Month in Norwalk. Members of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 12, visited City Hall on Tuesday to kick off the program that dates back to World War I. Auxiliary members Sue Jordan, Barbara Jordan Apy and Blanch Pinto visited with Mayor Richard Moccia who issued the official procalamation for the City.Money collected through the Poppy Program supports veterans in the Norwalk area. Auxiliary members also pack boxes of supplies that they ship to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.Those who make cash contributions receive the traditional red crepe poppy, a gesture of thanks that the women said also helps spread the word about their efforts. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the Poppy Program should look for the collection cans around town or visit the Auxiliary offices at 60 County St., Norwalk.
