Winged Monkey boutique is no flight of fancy: owner Cathy Vogel has too sharp an eye for quality and design. Its a unique and remarkably affordable place to shop for yourself and your teenage daughter.
No ruby slippers or blue gingham here. Instead, she stocks many of the best prêt-a-porter labels -- BCBG and their lower price point line, Max and Cleo; Gypsy 05; Élan and Sugar Lips; as well as one-of-a-kind samples from designer trunk shows. (This sample rack is located toward the back of the store and I highly recommend you spend some time getting acquainted, since Cathy is selling these au currant items at wholesale prices.)
I dont buy based solely on trends, says Cathy. We carry trends, but I try to approach them more subtly. Animal prints are exploding for fall, so Ive sprinkled some in, but in more sophisticated and unexpected ways. I dont overwhelm.
Cathy knows her store and the clothes in it. Were the only retailer in Westport to carry Hudson jeans, says Cathy. Mavi has also seen a real resurgence lately, especially for younger girls because the price point is so great. And we always have Nicole Miller. Her pieces are timeless.
She also knows her customers. I love Westport, says the resident Manhattanite. I love it. I love the people. Theyre New Yorkers, or like New Yorkers; theyre edgy, open-minded. They like to experiment with their style. And they have a great sense of humor.
Whether its her love for her customers or fashion in general, shes created quite collection for the style-minded. She also carries jewelry, both from acclaimed local designers like Alexandra Daly of Wilton, and the universal Swarovski Crystal. Just when you think youve finished shopping, youll stumble across the perfect accessory that you simply cant live without.
Sales associate and graduate student, Monica OKelly, enjoys getting to know the customers as well. Its so great to see someone light up when they find the perfect pair of jeans. I get a sense of accomplishment when I can help someone find something they love and look great in.
