Wield Smart Tools for Effective Leaf Cleanup

It's prime leaf-raking season. How are you going to tackle your leaves? Before starting to blow or rake, decide where leaves should go. Clear beds close to the house first and move leaves towards a central spot on the lawn. If you have a large yard, work one section at a time.

Here's a list of tools that will make the job easier:

• Yards with an abudance of leaves clean up most effectively with a walk-behind gas-powered blower. These can be rented from a local equipment rental company, but make sure to book ahead. Don't forget to have plenty of gas so that you can finish the job without running to the gas station. And wear ear protection.

• Backpack, gas-powered blowers can get into tight spaces, such as the flowerbeds. They run on a two-stroke mix of gas and oil. Again, protect your ears!

• Electric blowers are great for smaller yards. Many have a vacuum attachment, which allow you to suck up and shred leaves. This is a good choice for people who want to compost their leaves.

• Lawnmowers with a bagging attachment are another way of picking up and shredding leaves. Set the wheel height at the highest level.

• Newer leaf rakes are much lighter than they used to be. Many have twisted, ergonomic handles which can save your back.

• Bagging goes much faster if you pick the leaves up with leaf scoops. Ace Hardware sells a set that looks like yellow garbage can lids with teeth for $7.49.
