Docs Café, a Westport institution since 2000, will close its doors Saturday, Nov. 19. But not without a last hurrah. Docs will host a good-bye bash from 3 to 6 p.m. on its final day, when proprietors will offer free coffee, espresso, beer, wine and nibbles to customers.
Much has been written, including in this column, about the resurgence of Westports Saugatuck neighborhood. Recent newcomers to the hood such as Craft Butchery, Rizzutos and Mario Batalis Tarry Lodge have put the word renaissance on the lips of locals for months. Docs Café, however, may be the first local institution to close in the name of development.
CTBites reports that the building by the train station that houses Docs will be demolished to allow for the construction of a new multi-use development. Docs owner, Yvonne Dougherty, wont be so easily ousted, however. Rumor has it that she is considering relocating the café and reopening sometime in 2012.
