What Gifts Do Norwalk Grads Want Most?

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – As schools and families bid a fond farewell to the class of 2012, the graduates themselves are looking forward to receiving some hard-earned parting gifts from loved ones.

What’s topping the lists of Fairfield County grads?

“I wanted money because it’s so versatile,” says Sebastien Laforest, a Fairfield College Preparatory 2011 grad. “I would use it for books in college, or for any unexpected costs. It’s just such a practical gift.”

A popular choice, cash is at the top of Sacred Heart University 2012 grad Alexandra Tortora’s list as well. “For me, money is the top choice because I have to pay for things like rent and car payments. An actual gift can’t do that.” The practically minded Tortora does have one other suggestion. “An alternative for me would be a gift card to J.Crew, because I’ll need an entire professional wardrobe when I start working in June.”

Tech gifts have been popular in recent years as well. Mary Chimenti, a 2011 Fairfield Ludlowe High School grad listed an iPhone as her top gift. “I was moving to New York City,” says the Parsons New School of Design student. “I knew it would be helpful to have the iPhone capabilities and tools in the palm of my hand.”

But for the giver who prefers to gift a grad with something she’ll cherish for years to come, Westport jewelry designer and gemologist, Faye Kim, has a few thoughts. “We do quite a bit of business during graduation time. Our sapphire or gemstone bezel earrings do very well. Our oversized pearl ring is quite popular, too, for graduates. And our gold initial charms always do well for occasions like graduation. Pieces like these are special because they are able to mark a specific occasion, but because of the quality and the timeless style, you can wear them for years to come.”
