Each week in this section you can find a new article about things to keep you busy in and near your garden -- in every season.
Week Two: Seed catalogs are piling up fast and furiously on my desk - and that means just one thing. It's time to start planning your 2012 garden.
There's no hurry - we're several weeks away from starting seeds indoors, let alone planting anything outside. But this is a good time to sit back and enjoy browsing photos of flowers and vegetables while you make lists of old favorites to grow again this year. Maybe this is the year you try some new varieties.
I grow only organic vegetables in my garden and am picky when it comes to seeds. This year I want to harvest my own seeds from some vegetables (check back here in the fall). But I need to plan now so that I buy the right seeds to guarantee good crops.
Here are some of my favorite seed catalogs:
Seeds of Change (certified organic), The Cooks Garden, Territorial Seed Company, Kitchen Garden Seeds, Vermont Bean Seed Company, Jung Seeds & Plants, Totally Tomatoes, Exciting Gardens, R.H. Shumways, Burpee Gardening.
Miller Nurseries has a great selection of fruit trees and shrubs as well as everything needed to care for them.
