Warm Fall Yields December Peas

Just for fun, I decided to plant a few snow pea seeds in my garden in September. I had no idea what to expect - but it certainly wasn't that I'd be picking crunchy fresh peas in December. The plants are still producing flowers, so, who knows, there may be a few more peas before frost kills the plants. If we ever get frost.

Fresh garden peas are one of the first crops gardeners pick in the spring. They grow best in cool weather and die down by the time the sun has warmed the soil enough to plant tomatoes.

This year's unusually long and warm fall was perfect for growing spring crops. I wish I'd thought to plant another crop of lettuce.

Gardening, especially vegetable growing, is all about experimenting. The worst that can happen is that something doesn't grow. In which case you plant something else. Seed catalogs have just started arriving in mailboxes so as the days get shorter and colder, dream about spring and plan what you'll grow next year. Spring - and peas - will be here before you know it.
