Walk a Mile of Pink

Although October is breast cancer awareness month, breast cancer awareness is actually a year-round mission. The sixth annual "Paint the Town Pink" event celebrates survivors and supporters of breast cancer. Many of them will stand alongside Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia and WABC-TV's meteorologist Bill Evans to kick off this year's event.

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in American women. Awareness is a critical factor in the fight against breast cancer, and "Paint the Town Pink," which begins Saturday, Oct. 2, underscores its importance. "Paint the Town Pink" is sponsored by Stamford Hospital. Below are highlights of some upcoming events.

Friday, Oct 1: Dinner at Westport's Blue Lemon Restaurant, 7 Sconset Sq. Enjoy a multi-course dinner, with selected wines for each course. Dinner begins at 8 p.m. Reservations are required. Call (203) 849-9003

Saturday, Oct.2: "Mile of Pink," 10:30 a.m. Veterans Park, Atlantic Street, Stamford. Come together and show support for local breast cancer survivors who will line the streets in pink.

Monday, Oct.4: "Faces of Light," Government Center, Washington Blvd., Stamford. Visit the Government Center lobby throughout the month where a photographic exhibit features portraits of breast cancer survivors from Stamford.

Thursday, Oct. 7: "Pink up the Runway," 6 p.m. Helen Ainson, 1078 Post Road, Darien. Meet "Project Runway" winner Irina Shabayeva, who is debuting her first collection. Enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres by Scena Wine Bar & Restaurant. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.helenainson.com, Proceeds benefit Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs. Friday, Oct. 8: "Girlfriends Luncheon," 12 p.m., The Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Celebrate love and friendship at an event that raises awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and supports women with breast cancer. The cost is $45 per person.

Wednesday, Oct. 13: "A Night of Shopping," 5 p.m., at Agabhumi, The Best of Bali, 27 Magee Ave., Stamford. Come for an evening of fun with music, hors d'oeuvres and wine. Twenty percent of sales will be donated to Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs.

Thursday, Oct. 14: "Cherry Street Salon Turns Pink," 5 p.m. 123 Cherry Street, New Canaan. Enjoy an evening of wine, food, music and relaxation treatments. Every guest receives a gift bag of products and a salon gift certificate. A $25 fee at the door benefits Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs. Call (203) 966-2433 for reservations.

Friday, Oct. 15: "Girls' Night Out," 6 p.m. Hilton Stamford Hotel, 1 First Stamford Pl., Stamford Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and all-female entertainment make this a night to remember. With "hats off" to survivors, gather all the wonderful women in your life and enjoy this memorable, special event. The cost is $50 per person and reservations are required. Tuesday, Oct. 19: "Art for Awareness," 6 p.m. Gates Restaurant & Bar, 10 Forest St., New Canaan. An auction of jewelry, photography and paintings. The cost is $40 per person and includes cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Proceeds benefit Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs.

Wednesday, Oct. 20: Fashion Show at Saks Fifth Avenue, Stamford Town Center, 6 p.m. An up-close look at the latest fall fashions, modeled by breast cancer survivors and their physicians. This event kicks off "Key to the Cure", a four-day nationwide initiative that raises awareness and funds for early detection and cures for women's cancers. A percentage of sales benefit Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs.

Sunday, Oct. 24: "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer," Sherwood Island State Park, Westport, at 11 a.m. For more information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.

Tuesday, Oct. 26: "Pretty in Pink," an evening of wine and food with fashions provided by Helen Ainson. Atria Senior Living, 50 Ledge Rd., Darien, at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy shopping, a chair massage and more. A $10 donation benefits Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs. Wednesday, Oct. 27: "Treats & Treasures," 6 p.m. at United House Wrecking, 535 Hope St., Stamford. Sample food and wine from area merchants and get a jump on holiday shopping with unique wares from United House Wrecking and other local vendors. Twenty percent of all sales benefit Stamford Hospital's breast cancer programs. The entry fee is $10.

Friday, Oct. 29: "Dance the Town Pink," 7:30 p.m. The Continental Manor, 112 Main St., Norwalk. Enjoy dinner and dancing to the sounds of "Groovology," a local band with lead singer Jenifer Menedis, Darien resident and breast cancer survivor. Tickets are $60 per person, plus cash bar.
