Triathletes Should Race to Lecture to Avoid Injury

It's that outdoor athlete time of year. But not only the kind who plays croquet in the backyard, or plays a few sets of tennis: it's triathlon season. A triathlon is comprised of three events in one race: biking, running and swimming. There has been a recent surge of participation in such races over the course of the last 10 years and triathlon participation is now at an all-time high in the United States.

For many athletes a triathlon represents the ultimate test of skills, endurance and commitment to fitness, however the physical demands of such rigorous events are significant. So are the risks for injuries. On Tuesday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. the ONS Foundation for Clinical Research and Education will offer a free seminar, "Injury Prevention for Triathletes and Cyclists: Safety Strategies for Training and Competition." The program takes place at ONS at 6 Greenwich Office Park, 10 Valley Drive.

The program -- which focuses attention on the common causes of injuries in triathletes and cyclists -- will be led by physicians with specialties in sports medicine who are also competitive athletes. Orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. Katie Vadasdi and primary-care sports medicine specialist has not only participated in triathlons, but also treats many patients who are triathletes. Dr. Vadasdi is an experienced triathlete who has completed two ironman competitions.

Also speaking will be Dr. Gloria Cohen and ONS physical therapist Abigail Ramsey. Dr. Cohen is a competitive cyclist and has also served as team physician to four Olympic Games. Abigail Ramsey is also a triathlete.

The seminar is timed to help athletes who are preparing for the summer and fall race season, and will cover topics including combined training, techniques for proper stretching and strengthening, post-injury training methods to return to racing and treatments for injuries. Each participant will be eligible for a raffle for computrainer classes and a bicycle tune-up, donated by Pacific Swim Bike Run of Stamford, as well as training items from TARGETRAINING of Westport and Greenwich.
