Traffic Fuels Summer's Final Fling

If you're planning on going somewhere this weekend you'll be in good company. AAA Southern New England estimates 34.4 million sojourners -- a 9.9 percent increase from last year -- are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home around this Labor Day holiday weekend, Sept. 2-6.

Here are some statistics you can read if you're stopped dead in traffic. Of that overall total:

* Ninety-one percent or 31.4 million folks will travel by car, a 10.3 percent increase over last year;

* Five percent or 1.62 million folks -- a 4.6 percent increase --will fly;

* And the remaining 4 percent or 1.38 million folks will take some other mode of transportation such as rail, bus or watercraft.

Travel from New England will outpace the national average. Labor Day travel in our region will likely grow 11 percent compared with last year with auto travel, and air travel is projected to rise by 11.4 and 5.5 percent, respectively. This holiday's increase appears to be the result of economic improvement over the last year.

Enjoy your final summer weekend: it might be even longer than you anticipated.
