Toss that Tire Gauge

Admit it: you never really knew how to read the tire gauge anyway. And now that the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has revealed it is developing self-inflating tires, you can finally throw that gauge away. Well, soon, that is.

The tire manufacturer revealed a new system – "Air Maintenance Technology" -- that allows tires to self-inflate automatically. Because it is completely self-contained, there is no need for the consumer to fumble with gauges, external pumps or electronics. "While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road," said Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear senior vice president and chief technical officer.

Car geeks know that tires kept at optimal operating pressure deliver lower emissions that tires that are over or underinflated. It also allows longer tire life, improved safety and improved vehicle performance, says Goodyear. Government research indicates that underinflated tires result in approximately three percent decrease in fuel mileage, which adds up to 12 cents per gallon at the pump.
