This Diet Is Just Your Type

Don't beat yourself up if the generic, one-size-fits-all diet you're on isn't giving you the desired results. Each body is different. Shouldn't our menus be?

Ed Hefferon, Customer Relations executive for Wilton-based D'Adamo Personalized Nutrition, says the answer is yes. Not surprising, considering his company is owned by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, author of the bestselling "Eat Right For Your Type." If you're not familiar with the "Eat Right..." concept, its premise is that people should tailor their diet according to blood type, a theory that sparked a revolution of sorts upon the book's release in the mid-nineties. The program's followers have a reputation for being fiercely devoted. Ed is pretty sure he knows why.

"I have seen some truly amazing turnarounds," he says. "It goes way beyond weight loss. I saw one man drop his cholesterol 60 points in a month! Another woman we had was in the habit of using her inhaler 11 times a day. Now she doesn't have to use it at all." It amazes Ed that so many elements of personal health can be linked to one basic trait that most of us don't even think about.

"You'd be surprised how many people have no idea what their blood type is," says Ed.

Ed was working as a traditional diet coach when a naturopath friend turned him on to the "Eat Right..." way. "I tried it and was like, 'This is amazing, I feel great!' Then my friend said, 'You should try to get a job with the company.'"

Ed applied, was hired, and hasn't looked back.

"This job fits what I'm all about," he says. "When I was a diet coach, I didn't like how temporary the progress people made turned out to be. This is really about a lifestyle change, so you can stick with it."

Since his first book, D'Adamo has expanded the "Right For Your Type" series to include specialized advice on exercise, lifestyle and how to best treat diseases such as diabetes and cancer, all depending on blood type. D'Adamo sells a complete line of complementary supplements, meal bars, and even at-home blood-testing kits.
