Think Finish Before Buying Faucets

Most people don’t give their faucets a second thought – until they need replacing. A trip to the store for a new one can leave you scratching your head in confusion. According to HGTV, new faucet designs and finishes provide the perfect way to introduce interesting design elements into your home. Here are some tips to help you when you get to the store:

• Before you go shopping, make sure you know how your existing faucet is mounted. You’ll need to buy the same type to fit into the holes in your counter top. Do you have a single-hole faucet with a lever, or are there separate hot and cold water taps with a central water spigot? Does your kitchen faucet have a separate spray attachment?

• Most styles of faucet are sold in various finishes, the three most common of which are chrome, nickel and oil-rubbed bronze. Chrome, which has a bluish cast, is the most widely sold and the least expensive. It has recently made a comeback in popularity. You’ll see polished or brushed nickel in upscale homes. Nickel has a warmer color than chrome. A brushed nickel faucet is the best option if your kitchen appliances are stainless steel. Oil-rubbed bronze is all the rage right now. Go with this dark brown matte finish for a farmhouse look.

• If you fall in love with a kitchen faucet that leaves you with an extra hole in your counter (maybe you picked one of the new styles with an integrated spray?), consider buying a soap or lotion dispenser to fit into the empty spot where the spray used to live.
