Thieves Target Big Cars

If you're happy driving your petite Volkswagen Beetle, you should by all means hang on to it because chances are good a car thief won't steal it. It turns out thieves are Cadillac fans, Escalades in particular.

Car thieves gravitate toward large trucks in general and the Cadillac Escalade SUV is a popular choice among them, according to a report from the Highway Loss Data Institute. Findings say the Escalade is more than six times as likely as the average vehicle to be targeted by thieves.

The report is based on analysis of insurance claims for 2008 through 2010 model-year vehicles. The worst ranking vehicle, that most likely to be stolen, is the Escalade EXT, a pickup truck-style version of the SUV. Other pickups are favorites among thieves, among them, the Ford F-250 crew cab with four-wheel-drive, which comes in second to the Escalade for the most theft claims.
