The FEZ Makes Urban Dining Delicious

What happens when a former music industry insider opens a restaurant? If his knack for finding culinary talent is as developed as Eric Monte’s, then the result is the total dining experience that is The FEZ. It’s fun, funky and completely unexpected. And the food will rock your world.

Eric and his business partner, Bharat Patel, opened The FEZ  three months ago on Summer Street in Stamford, the stretch now known as “Restaurant Row.” It’s part Moroccan-inspired den, part old-school New York late-night bar and bistro.  From the food to the music to the wine list -- complete with surprise appearances from Turkey and Lebanon -- Eric and Bharat aren’t afraid to take chances. And judging from the fedora-dotted, mid-week crowd, they’re serving up just what Fairfield County is craving.

“It’s always been my goal to entertain people with foods and wines that are not common to this part of the world,” says Eric. “It’s our belief that the perfect evening is the ideal marriage of food, wine and song.”

To that end, the duo has incorporated music into the menu. Tuesday nights are B.Y.O.V. -- Bring Your Own Vinyl. Unearth those early tracks from your youth and they’ll spin them as you dine. But take care in your selection. “One night, some guy brought in an old Red Fox comedy album,” Eric says. “You think comedy today is raunchy? We had to yank it after about 90 seconds.” In the PG-13 vein, belly dancers are in the house on Fridays to help you work up an appetite.

And a serious appetite is required at The FEZ. The caramelized cauliflower with golden raisins and toasted pine nuts is perfection of the sweet and savory persuasion. The kafta -- a mixture of beef, lamb and spices -- in any incarnation will have you calling for an encore. The kabobs, tagine and hummus are all poised to go double platinum, were there such an epicurean accolade. Even the tap water is cucumber-infused.

The FEZ is a Fairfield County dining destination, no passport required. Find them at 227 Summer Street in Stamford. Call (203) 324-3391 to plan your trip.
