Take the Guesswork out of Chandeliers

Picking the right-sized chandelier isn't easy. And once the fixture is out of the box, many stores won't take it back if you don't like the way it looks once it's hanging from your ceiling.

If you're shopping for a dining room chandelier, Ballard Designs has some neat tricks to help you determine the diameter you need. Add the length and width of your dining room. The answer equals the approximate diameter in inches of the fixture you need. So a 24-inch diameter chandelier would look perfect in a 12-by-12-foot room. If your dining room is 14 feet by 16 feet, you should shop for a 30-inch fixture.

If you already own a dining room table, the new chandelier should be one-half to three-quarters the width of the table. When you hang the chandelier, position it 30 to 32 inches above the dining table surface.
