Strike a Pose

The New Year has barely made a dent in the calendar and you're already stressing. It's time to position yourself into learning more about Yoga. So, before you make yourself sick -- for real -- with stress, there is good news. You don't have to trek to the Himalayas to unwind and recharge.

Yoga helps you relax and handle stressful situations more easily. It also helps quiet the mind so you can focus your energy where you want it to go. Additionally, yoga improves respiration and energy, and helps builds awareness of your body, your feelings and the world around you. Below are some local yoga emporiums. Let the relaxing and rejuvenating begin.

Fairfield. Yoga for Everybody features hardwood floors and windows overlooking the downtown area. A newly added boutique on the lower level sells an abundance of goods from clothing and books. The studio offers a wide range of classes and workshops.

Norwalk. Bikram Yoga is a hot-yoga destination. This type of yoga unfurls in a heated room, which makes stretching and moving easier. Classes are ideal for relaxation and improving a body's overall strength, flexibility and stamina. Beginners and all ages are welcome.

Westport. Arogya means "whole health" in Sanskrit. Since opening in 2000, Arogya has provided a wellspring for alternative and integrative healing, tea, natural skincare, herbs, yoga, and nutrition.

Darien. Elements Yoga & Wellness Center. Elements has well-trained instructors who can help you tap into your more spiritual side.

Weston. Yoga Journey. Owner/teacher Janet Wilcox, an "integrated yoga therapist and Reiki practitioner," runs this small studio.

Stamford: Dew Yoga offers a wide range of teachings, meditation and healing. Dew Yoga is accessible to a wide entire socio-economic spectrum in order to promote wellbeing and healing to the communities it serves.

Westport. Kaia Yoga. Owners Stan Woodman and Gina Norman named the studio after their three-year-old daughter Kaia (from Greek, meaning "pure"). They are devoted yogis who have both practiced and taught yoga throughout the world. There are four studios here, as well as an organic snack bar. Additionally, the lower level studio is a hot room that warms up to a muscle-melting 110 degrees.

Now, take a deep, cleansing breath. And exhale. You're feeling less stress already. Namaste.
