Strawberry Wows Fans at BMW Bridgeport

The "Strawman" still dazzles fans. The fans, however, were not sitting in the bleachers at a baseball stadium, but rather in the sporty red leather seats of a James Bond-like Z4 M Roadster and in the well-appointed, high-performance comfort of an X6 xDrive35i, among other models at BMW of Bridgeport. And Darryl Strawberry, the legendary baseball player, wasn't at bat. He came to the dealership recently to help promote a huge, one-day sale event.

"It's great having a sports figure like Darryl Strawberry here at the dealership," said BMW of Bridgeport general sales manager Tim Coughlin. "He's a great friend of ours and people just want to come out and see him." If the sea of blue Mets jerseys and caps was any indication, many people did just that.

Strawberry and former teammate Dwight Gooden are the only two players to win a World Series championship with both the Yankees and the Mets. At six-feet, six-inches, he is a towering figure both at the plate and in person. He shook hands and chatted with customers and staff and signed photos, bats and hats. Kids who were born well after the former Met -- not to mention Yankee, Dodger and Giant -- retired seemed mesmerized by the legendary player, who loomed large above them. But Darryl, who walks with the graceful swagger of a veteran athlete, was nonplussed by the attention: "It's nice you guys remember me!" he said.

Founded in Munich, BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) began in the early 1900s manufacturing aircraft. The iconic logo reflects these origins, with white propeller blades against a blue sky.
