Stand Tall

You always knew that poor posture led to...well, poor posture. But slumped shoulders are the least of it: Everything from headaches to shortness of breath to tight muscles and fatigue can develop as a result of perpetually hunching over your desk. Her research on the topic is what led Dr. Beverly Marr of Stamford Healthcare Associates to develop "The SOAR Method for Perfect Posture," a regime of stretching and strengthening exercises using a Swiss exercise ball that improve posture by building core strength.

“At screenings, we ask people how they rate their posture and 90 percent say, ‘terrible,’ not okay, not poor, but terrible,” says Dr. Marr. A chiropractor for 15 years and a longtime equestrian, she drew on both skill sets to design the SOAR method. “The exercises improve the range of motion of the joints and muscles by allowing oxygen to circulate properly throughout the body." Through her emphasis on balance and agility, Dr. Marr says she has seen patients gain up to two inches in height. Better still, SOAR is gentle enough for patients of all fitness levels.
