Springtime Calls for Patience in the Garden

If you’re a gardener like me, you’re probably checking your flower and vegetable beds a couple of times a day, right? Warm weather and lots of sun means that seeds are starting to shoot up. Be patient. It won’t be long before you’ll be eating your own homegrown, organic salads.

Here are some things you can do for your garden while you wait.

*  Turn your compost once a week. The more often you turn it, the quicker you’ll have finished compost to work into the soil around your plants and give them an extra boost as they grow. If you don't have a compost pile, start now. Compost is just decomposed vegetable matter which gardeners call black gold because it contains nutrients that make everything grow bigger and better. For help starting your own pile, read here.

*  Get yourself some bags of Coast of Maine compost. My favorite is the Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost. It’s made from composted crab and lobster shells with aspen bark thrown in. Watch your vegetables take off when you add this to their soil. You can find Coast of Maine products at Sam Bridge Nursery in Greenwich, Nielsen’s Florist & Garden in Darien, Reynolds Farms Nursery in Norwalk, Geiger’s Garden Center and Gilbertie’s Herb Garden in Westport and Ganim’s Garden Center in Fairfield.

*  If you want to make your own natural fertilizer, take a trip to the beach and collect some seaweed. Soak the seaweed for a week or so in a rain barrel or large bucket and use this for watering your plants.
