There's style, and then there's style with a statement a socially conscious one, that is. If you'd like to transform summer chic into social consciousness, here are a few tips to send you on the road to sartorial sanctimoniousness this summer:
Thinking of sporting a shorter do? Donate your fallen tresses to Locks of Love, nonprofit organization that distributes donated hair to create prosthetics for financially disadvantaged children who suffer from hair loss due to chronic medical issues.
Buy a pair of "Ugandals": The sporty sandal company, Reef has partnered with 31 Bits, a business that endeavors to empower Ugandan women to rise above poverty by using fashion and design. 31 Bits purchases handmade jewelry from Ugandan women each month, which provides them a stable income. Reef pre-purchased the women's handcrafted beads fashioned from recycled magazine paper -- and incorporated them into the "Ugandal," a t-strap sandal that is available on their website. Reef donates one percent of the sandal's proceeds to the Reef Redemption Fund, their own nonprofit organization.
Need a new or just another beach bag? Make a $50 donation to the World Wildlife Fund and you'll receive a sea turtle beach bag made with up to 50 percent recycled content. WWLF operates in 100 countries, and its goal is to conserve the world's most important natural places and change global markets to protect the "future of nature."
