Food brings us together. It nourishes people and relationships. Often, it is the center of our celebrations. But its absence atrophies bodies and communities.
Hunger knows no calendar, but September has been designated as Hunger Action Month to give voice to this silent struggle, and theres a whole host of ways for you to get involved. The Connecticut Food Bank, whose mission it is to alleviate hunger, has been innovating ways to feed Connecticuts hungry for more than 25 years.
Donating money or time is always appreciated within such charitable organizations. But late summer and early fall often find weekend gardeners with more produce than they know what to do with. Some food banks only accept non-perishables. But at the hyper-local level, you can find organizations that will take those extra tomatoes or zucchini off your hands.
For more information on how you can donate your surplus to help make up a neighbors deficit, contact the Connecticut Food Banks Fairfield Warehouse at 203-256-1935.
