Sexy Scents Sizzle in Cooler Weather

Changing your wardrobe with the seasons is a given. Cooler weather automatically means warmer clothes. It also means switching your scent from the lighter florals of summer to one with a richer, earthier bouquet.

“I tend to go with something woodsy and spicy for fall and winter,” says Jayne Harvey, the smiling face behind the perfume counter at Achorn’s Pharmacy in Westport. “So fragrances like -- even though it’s an old-timer -- Opium are wonderful for wintertime. And Estée Lauder has come out with a newer fragrance, Sensuous, which has a warm, amber feel to it.”

Jayne knows her nose. She’s been selling scents for 35 years.

“Vanillas, ambers, perfumes with peppery notes -- these are the kinds of fragrances we can carry for winter because our body temperature changes. You could never wear a fragrance like that in the summer. But now, in cooler weather, our skin gets dryer and we hold up these fragrances beautifully. I like to think of them as comfort scents.”

Does she have a favorite “comfort scent” for cold weather?

“Probably Coco, by Chanel. It’s spicy and sexy,” she says.

Follow your nose to Achorn’s Pharmacy, located at 166 Main Street in Westport. Ask for Jayne. She’ll slip you into a sensuous new scent to steam up your winter nights.
