There's just something about an antique fire engine. The color, the curves, and yes--the sound of that siren. The members of New Canaan's Old Faithful Antique Fire Engine Association--all admitted fire engine buffs and some former members of the New Canaan Fire Department--love these bright red pieces of history and devote their time to showing them off. If you've got an afternoon, they'll will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about these unique wheels. "Two of the engines, a 1922 Seagrave pumper and the 1953 Ward LaFrance, were in active service in New Canaan," they told me. "The Ward LaFrance actually replaced the Seagrave in 1953. Since being taken out of active service in the early 1980s, it has had its tank and hose bed removed and the space converted to hold benches for the safety and gratification of the people who revel in riding in it."
The Old Faithful collection was a big hit at the Calf Pasture Car Show in Norwalk recently. If you can't wait for the next antique car show to see them, you can hire them for birthday parties--even weddings. The group is a registered nonprofit and charges no fees. It survives on donations to keep these historic wheels shined and rolling.
