Red Lulu Opens to Red-Hot Reception

Fasten your seatbelts, Fairfield County: Red Lulu has arrived. Brought to you by Jody Penette and his red-hot team of restaurant professionals, cb5, Red Lulu promises to be the next great hot spot on everyone’s list.

Lulu opened her SoNo doors last Thursday with a coquettish, invitation-only event. And even if you weren’t on the list, the party was hard to miss. Photographers flanked the red carpet outside, adjacent to a tangerine Lamborghini. Inside, a combination of dj-spun and live music thumped against scarlet walls and bounced off red, Italian chandeliers, while beautiful bartenders clad in bustiers and tight t-shirts mixed up some of the best margaritas this side of the Rio Grande.

But don’t let the flash fool you: Lulu is not just another pretty face on the Fairfield County restaurant scene.  The menu packs a major Mexican punch and is every bit as delicious as the space is decadent.

At Red Lulu -- sister restaurant to Greenwich Mexican cocina and tequila bar, Lolita -- guests are greeted with bowls of sweet, tequila-laced granita that forges an icy trail of steam as it winds its way through the dining room like a flirtatious white boa. And it lands with a flourish on your table. Billed as a “palate cleanser,” it's more like fuel-injection for your appetite.

Like Red Lulu's, Lolita’s menu entices with ancho-orange glazed lobster enchiladas and crisp jicama salads. The carne asada is about as good as it gets, even for palates trained on Manhattan fare. Meats are moist and succulent, and spices are perfectly balanced. Even the most jaded “foodie” will leave either spot with their next visit in mind.

Put Lolita and her baby sister, Red Lulu, on your list. They’re sexy, smart and delicious. But be careful, you may just get addicted to their particular brand of total epicurean experience. It’s that hot.
