Ramp Down your Workout in Hot Weather

Is winter beginning to look a just a little more appealing right about now? Personally, I'll take heat over cold any day, but the heat wave is pushing the boundaries of my favoring summer over winter. Working out in the heat, though, presents its own challenges.

Dan Zahler of Anytime Fitness in Wilton has some tips to beat the heat:

Hydrate – drink as much water as you feel you need.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Caffeine will cause you to eliminate fluids, and alcohol will cause your cells to retain fluids rather than eliminate toxins.

Plan workouts and vigorous activity for before 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m., when the sun is not at its peak. Cover your skin with loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Thin, light-colored sleeves and pants are actually more cooling than short sleeves and shorts.Make sure they are loose enough to allow air circulation. Sunscreen should be used on all exposed skin.

Eat light foods. And remember: Most fruits and vegetables are composed mainly of water, so loading up on these will help cool you off.

If you have access to a pool or the beach, take advantage of the water, but remember that sand and water reflect the sun's UV rays, so you will burn faster if not protected by sunscreen.
