Put Down That (Genetically Modified) Soybean

If you are what you eat, then you should avoid eating foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs are created in laboratories through a process in which genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and then artificially forced into the genes of another plant or animal. The extracted genes can be transferred from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans.

According Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology and author of the new book, "Genetic Roulette," there is evidence that links GMOs to toxic and allergic reactions and sick livestock, as well as to damage to the organs of lab animals.

The IRT website states that genetic food engineers frequently encounter unintended side effects in the modifying process. GMOs react to weather differently from regular foods and often become diseased or die.

Jeff will be giving a talk about this scientific trend toward altering food crops, at the Greenwich Audubon Society, Wednesday, April 27, from 7:00 to 9:00 p .m. Learn about the steps that can be taken to avoid – and most importantly, to eliminate – GMOs from the nation's food chain.

There will be a reception from 5:30-7:00 pm. Admission is $15 per person, space is limited and RSVPs are required. For tickets and information, contact Jeff at jcordulack@audubon.org or (203) 869-5272, extension 239.
