Put a Lid on It

There's still some summer sun left, and any beauty expert will tell you to keep it off your face. But a summer hat doesn't need to be big and floppy. Try some urban chic on for size, while the sun is still shining.

This look, worn by Sarah Manning of Westport, is fresh, fun and a little bit funky, thanks to the fab fedora. It's backyard barbecue style at its best. Pair a pared-down brim with just about anything. Dress-up shorts and a blowsy tee, or use it to finish off a sleek-but-casual tank-and-denim combination.

"Moms still like to look cute," says Manning, mother of two boys, ages 4 and 20 months. "With two little ones, I don't have a lot of time to spend on me and how I look. Sometimes, the right accessory makes all the difference."

But would she wear it to the beach?

"Absolutely!" says Manning. "We spend the majority of the summer at Compo Beach. You need a hat to save your face because there's no shade there. A fedora has the added bonus of bringing a little New York City to Fairfield County." Manning and her family relocated to Westport from lower Manhattan in 2008, in search of a little more peace and quiet and a lot more space.

So where does an ex-Manhattanite shop for style in Westport?

"Oh, I try to be frugal," she laughs. "But I kind of just love to shop. The Anthropologie sale racks always have something I just can't afford not to buy," she smiles, referencing the eclectic and effortlessly feminine atelier at 1365 Post Road East in Westport. "It's like one-stop shopping. I can find a great accessory, a cute top and an unusual piece for my house. What's better than that?"

And the fedora she's working?

"You won't believe where I found it," she confides. "Target."
